About movies.

Ok,so,at school is pretty boring sometime so i want to watch some movies.
My question is,i got 4video mkv converter,and the .avi file(the movie),it takes the same lenght as the movie's one to convert which is really annoying,anyway,does .mkv supports .srt or .sub subtitles ?
Should i convert it to mkv or mp4 ?
Or something else ?
I know i could watch directly .avi but 800 mb is pretty much on my 2 GB SD card,so i heard .mkv takes twice less ~350 mb.
